On February 26, 2024, the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) made a historic announcement that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train, originating from Dar es Salaam, had officially commenced its inaugural trial run to the Morogoro region. It is anticipated that by July this year, the SGR train from Dar es Salaam to the capital city, Dodoma, will commence full operations.
The construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is one of the Tanzanian government's most important projects, aimed at enhancing the quality and efficiency of the domestic railway network. With a total length of approximately 1,600 kilometers, the railway not only links major cities within the country, including Dar es Salaam, the capital Dodoma, and the western port city of Mwanza, but also extends through border railway stations to neighboring landlocked countries such as Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda in the future. The implementation of this project will significantly reduce transportation time for both goods and passengers domestically, thereby promoting regional trade and industrial development. The official inauguration of the SGR will greatly enhance Tanzania's transportation infrastructure, reducing logistics costs, improving transport efficiency, and accelerating the circulation of goods. Simultaneously, it will serve as a significant catalyst for the development of regional economies within Tanzania. Various commodities and resources can be transported more quickly and conveniently from production areas to markets, thereby stimulating growth in sectors such as agriculture, mining, and manufacturing.
